I'm moving from Colorado to Maryland later in the Spring. So now we are going through the drudgery of prepping our house to sell and looking for a new house. Have you looked at housing prices in Maryland near DC? Let me put it this way, $500,000 does not buy you very much. So, we started looking in the country. It turns out the houses were more like $1 Million. Oy. I don't have a million of anything, as far as know (cue the know-it-alls in the comments). But I did find a nice smallish house amongst the McMansions with 3 acres and a wonderful garage. Look at it. I bet I could squeeze a dozen cars in it. And it includes a John Deere tractor and a propane heater!!! Now if I had Jay Leno's fortune to clean up the garage and fill it with automotive goodness.
And the house is pretty nice too.

Jesus, I can't imagine having the kind of scratch to even begin shopping for houses like that. O.O

i'm used to living in the city near toronto...that is a FUCK ton of house for 500K. that house/land/garage, if it was near my area, would be in the MULTIPLE millions.

I'm right at young and hwy 7 (out of toronto...but probably the most expensive area to live outside to)
the house was 200k when my parents bought it brand new 14? years ago. now, its creeping up into the 700s.

Nice! I've already let my wife know that our next house has to have at least a 3-car garage. Thankfully the houses around here aren't nearly as expensive so finding one for less than $300k is pretty easy.

I don't want to come off tacky or anything, but here it goes. If you need an agent let me know. My mother has been in the RE business for over 20 years in this area and would certainly be happy to help you find a place. Hell, sometimes I look up houses for fun. I don't know if you have an agent yet, or don't want one, but I'm just throwing this out there because it could be beneficial to the both of us. Also, near DC is going to be pricy. I don't know what exact area you are looking for, or where you will be working/commuting to, but I can definitely help you with the ins and outs of particular areas. Again, not a scam, just a fellow oppo trying to help out. The last thing I want is for someone to come all this way to end up with a shitty experience. AND, at the very least, I can point you to the best Cars and Coffees to attend closes to wherever you end up. I frequent one pretty much every weekend in Bethesda. Very nice selection and more intimate.
Yah, just let me know

Get pumped for taxes. I don't know about MD, but down here in VA the appraisal values keep sky rocketing. My house (bout a mile outside the beltway) has gone up almost 100 grand in the last 3 years which translates to almost 1000 bucks extra in property tax per year. It has caught a couple coworkers out. I imagine it's the same up there north of the border.

Wow, I just looked at listings in my hometown and $450k is list price for 2400 sq. ft. with a two story three car garage and 40' of frontage on an all–sports lake. Now I know why my dad puts up with such a long commute haha

It's not big or fancy, but it's got huge garage and a dock!

That's because the GTA has such an out of whack real estate market that it's actually not funny.

I know, it's nuts. This is our little $400K slice of VA, 20 miles from DC.
Good luck with your search, and look up Great Falls Cars & Coffee.

In my home area, that would get you a house on over 100 acres lol.

Yep. The taxes are around $5500 for most of the houses, though one of them was taxed at $16k. Seriously.
